Varkala has five beaches worth your time, spread over roughly 10 km of coast: Papanasam below the cliff, Black Beach just north of it, Odayam a little further on, then Edava and Kappil at the top end. Only the first two are walkable from the North Cliff. The rest need wheels.
That spread is the thing nobody mentions. People arrive expecting "Varkala beach" to be one place, and it isn't — it's a string of very different beaches, and which one suits you depends mostly on whether you can get to it.
Papanasam Beach — the main one, below the cliff
This is the beach in every photo of Varkala: the wide stretch of sand directly under the North Cliff, reached by the steps down from the cliff path. It's the busiest, the most serviced, and the one with lifeguards in season.
Walkable from anywhere on the North Cliff, which is exactly why it's crowded. Come early if you want the sand to yourself; by mid-morning in season it is not a quiet beach.
How do you get to Black Beach?
Walk north along the cliff from Papanasam for about fifteen minutes and drop down — Black Beach sits immediately north of the main beach and is reachable on foot. It gets its name and its dark colour from heavy mineral deposits in the sand.
It's noticeably quieter than Papanasam and the sand really is black, which surprises people. Fewer facilities, fewer people, and a good place to end up if the main beach is heaving.
Odayam Beach
A couple of kilometres north of the cliff, and the first one where you'll want a vehicle rather than your feet — the walk is doable but hot and along the road. Small, rocky in parts, backed by a handful of quiet places to stay.
This is the beach for people who found the cliff too loud. There's not much to do there, which is the point.
Edava and Kappil — the top end
Kappil is about 9 km north of the cliff, roughly 25 minutes on a scooter, and it's the most striking of the lot: the backwater runs parallel to the sea with a narrow strip of road between the two. Edava sits just short of it.
These are the ones you plan a morning around rather than wander down to. We covered the ride itself in five rides worth taking from Varkala — it's the easiest coastal run here and the one we'd send a nervous rider on first.
Where do you park?
Parking is the practical problem nobody writes about. The short version: the cliff path itself is pedestrian, so you leave the bike behind the strip and walk the last few minutes, and at every beach north of town it is informal roadside space that fills by late morning. A two-wheeler fits where a car simply does not.
- North Cliff: parking is behind the cliffside strip rather than on it — the cliff path is pedestrian. Expect to leave the bike a few minutes' walk from wherever you're going, and expect it to be tight in the evenings.
- Papanasam: there's space near the beach road at the southern end, which is usually easier than trying to park up top.
- Odayam: easy, informal, roadside.
- Kappil: park near the bridge. It fills with tour vans by late morning, which is another reason to go early.
A two-wheeler is a real advantage at all of these. Cars struggle for space at every one of them.
Which beaches are safe to swim at?
Papanasam is the one with lifeguards and the one where swimming is normal — but the Arabian Sea here has genuine rip currents, the shelf drops away faster than it looks, and people get into trouble every season. Swim where others are swimming and where a lifeguard can see you.
During the monsoon, roughly June to September, swimming is a bad idea at all of them regardless of how calm the water looks between squalls. The undercurrents are the problem, not the surface. There's more on what the season changes in renting a bike in Varkala during monsoon.
At the quieter beaches there is nobody watching. Treat them as places to sit rather than places to swim out.
Can you see them all in a day?
