Frequently asked questions

Everything you need before you ride.

Do you deliver to my hotel or homestay?

Yes. We deliver free anywhere on North Cliff and Varkala Beach, and to the railway station on request. Just tell us where you're staying.

Is a helmet included?

Always. Every two-wheeler goes out with at least one clean helmet — pillion helmets on request, at no extra cost.

Is there a security deposit?

When do I pay?

Payment is required online via Razorpay when you book — same as the Android app. Your booking is confirmed once payment succeeds.

Bike Ride Executive

Varkala, Kerala Full-time Operations
Apply now

You are the person our riders actually meet. You deliver the bike, hand over the helmet, make sure the ride is spotless and get travellers on the road without fuss.

What you'll do

  • Deliver and collect scooters and bikes across Varkala — North Cliff, the beach, homestays and the railway station.
  • Check every vehicle before it goes out: fuel, tyres, brakes, lights and a clean helmet in the box.
  • Walk riders through the controls, the paperwork and the local road rules, especially first-time visitors.
  • Keep the fleet tidy and flag anything that needs servicing before it becomes a breakdown.
  • Answer rider calls and messages during your shift and sort problems on the spot where you can.

What we're looking for

  • A valid two-wheeler driving licence and confident riding on Varkala roads.
  • You know the area — the cliff, the beach roads and the shortcuts.
  • Comfortable talking to travellers; conversational English alongside Malayalam.
  • Reliable with timings. Riders are on holiday and a late delivery ruins a day.
  • Basic smartphone use for bookings and updates.

Nice to have

  • Hands-on experience with two-wheeler maintenance.
  • Previous work in rentals, hospitality or tourism in Varkala.

Riding in Varkala

Best bike rentals in Varkala: how to pick the right one

Varkala is small enough to walk and spread out enough that you will not want to. The cliff, Odayam, Kappil backwaters, Anjengo fort and the quieter beaches south of town are all within a comfortable ride, and almost none of it is well served by public transport. A scooter or bike is the difference between seeing the cliff and seeing Varkala.

The problem is that "bike rental Varkala" turns up dozens of options, and they are genuinely not the same. Below is what separates a rental you will forget about (in a good way) from one that eats a day of your holiday.

1. Check that the rental is actually authorised

This is the one most travellers skip. Renting from an unauthorised operator can leave you without valid cover if something goes wrong, and it is your problem, not theirs, when it does. Ask directly whether the business is government-authorised and registered to rent vehicles.

LocoRides is Varkala's first government-authorized bike rental service — that is the single biggest reason we would point you towards a licensed operator over the cheapest board on the roadside.

2. Bring the right licence for the right vehicle

You need a valid government photo ID and your driving licence. What matters is the class:

  • Gearless scooters (Activa, Dio, Jupiter) need a two-wheeler licence — or an International Driving Permit if you are visiting from abroad.
  • Geared bikes like the Royal Enfield Classic 350 need a licence valid for gear (MCWG in India).

Foreign travellers are absolutely able to rent: bring your passport plus a valid driving licence or IDP. A photo of your licence on your phone is not enough on its own — bring the actual document.

3. Helmets should never be an upsell

Kerala enforces helmet rules, and Varkala's cliff road has enough sand, dogs and distracted pedestrians to make it a bad place to test your luck. Every rental should include a clean helmet as standard, with a pillion helmet available on request at no extra cost. If a rental treats a helmet as an add-on, that tells you what else they are cutting.

4. Understand the deposit and what comes out of it

A small refundable deposit is normal and varies by vehicle. What is not normal is vagueness. Before you pay, you should know the deposit amount, when it comes back, and what could be deducted. Ask for the damage terms in writing. Normal scuffs from ordinary use should not cost you; damage from an accident or misuse reasonably will.

5. Work out the real price, not the headline price

Ask what the quoted rate actually includes:

  • Kilometre limit — most rentals include a daily allowance and charge a per-kilometre rate beyond it. Both numbers should be shown before you book.
  • Fuel — vehicles usually go out with enough to get you started; you refuel as you ride and return it at a similar level.
  • Taxes and cleaning — these should be visible at checkout, not sprung on you at drop-off.

Our own pricing is shown in full at checkout with the kilometre limit and extra-kilometre rate on every vehicle card, so you can compare like for like before committing.

6. Match the vehicle to the riding you will actually do

  • Cliff, beach and town errands: a gearless scooter. Easy to park, light in traffic, cheap to run, and anyone with a two-wheeler licence can ride one.
  • Day trips to Kappil, Ponnumthuruthu or further down the coast: something with more punch and a comfortable seat. This is where a geared bike earns its keep.
  • Two people plus bags: think about pillion comfort and a bike that is not straining on the hills.

If you are planning long distances, say so when you book. It changes which vehicle we would put you on.

7. Rent for the time you need, not a rounded-up day

Plenty of travellers only need a few hours to get to Kappil and back. Hourly rentals exist for exactly that, and you should not be forced into a full day. It is also worth checking how extensions work before you need one — being able to add an hour from your phone, without riding back to a shop, is the difference between a relaxed afternoon and a rushed one.

8. Delivery beats a queue

A rental that delivers to your homestay saves you a walk with luggage in the heat. We deliver free anywhere on North Cliff and Varkala Beach, and to the railway station on request — you tell us where you are staying and the bike turns up fuelled with a helmet.

9. A quick word on riding in Varkala

  • The cliff path is for walking. Use the road.
  • Sand on tarmac near the beaches is slippery — brake early and gently.
  • Cows, dogs and autos have right of way in practice, whatever the rules say.
  • Avoid unfamiliar roads after dark; lighting outside town is thin.
  • Carry your licence and ID with you, not in your room.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Documents, delivery, deposits and everything else riders ask us before picking up a scooter in Varkala.

Booking & payment

Rates, deposits and how you pay.

Payment is required online via Razorpay when you book — same as the Android app. Your booking is confirmed once payment succeeds.

A small refundable deposit applies and varies by vehicle. It's shown at checkout and returned in full at drop-off.

Yes — hourly, daily, weekly and full-trip rentals, with better rates the longer you ride. Message us for a custom quote.

You get a booking reference on screen the moment payment goes through, and the same booking appears under My Bookings when you are logged in. If you ever lose the reference, log in with the phone number you booked with and it will be there.

Bookings made on the website are paid online so the vehicle is reserved and held for you. If you would rather arrange something else, message us on WhatsApp before you book and we will sort it out.

No. The price you see at checkout includes the rental and any add-ons you picked, with taxes shown separately before you pay. Fuel and any traffic fines during your rental are the only things you pay for on your own.

Documents & licence

What to bring, including for visitors from abroad.

A valid government photo ID and your driving licence. Gearless scooters need a two-wheeler licence (or IDP for foreign visitors); geared bikes like the Classic 350 need a licence valid for gear (MCWG).

Yes — bring your passport and a valid driving licence or International Driving Permit. Many of our riders are visiting from abroad.

A one-time licence check keeps every rider on the road legally insured and lets us hand the keys over without paperwork at delivery. You upload it once from your account and it carries across all your future bookings.

You need to be old enough to hold a valid licence for the class of vehicle you are renting. Bring the licence itself — a photo of it on your phone is not enough on its own.

Delivery & pickup

Where we drop off, and when.

Yes. We deliver free anywhere on North Cliff and Varkala Beach, and to the railway station on request. Just tell us where you're staying.

Same-day is usually fine outside peak season, but December to February the good scooters go quickly. Booking a day or two ahead means you get the exact vehicle you picked rather than the nearest match.

You choose your pickup and drop-off times when you search, and we work around your travel — early trains and late buses included. Pick the times that suit your trip and we will be there.

The person riding has to be the person on the booking, with their own licence and ID. If your plans change, message us and we will move the booking to the right rider.

On the road

Helmets, fuel and what happens if something goes wrong.

Always. Every two-wheeler goes out with at least one clean helmet — pillion helmets on request, at no extra cost.

Vehicles come with enough fuel to get you started. You refuel as you ride and return it with a similar level.

Call or WhatsApp us and we will come to you. If it cannot be fixed on the spot we swap the vehicle out so you are not stuck waiting on a repair.

Yes — plenty of our riders head to Kappil, Ponnumthuruthu or further along the coast. Tell us if you are planning a long trip so we can put you on a vehicle that suits the distance.

Ride carefully and wear your helmet — that covers most of it. Minor scuffs from normal use are on us; damage from an accident or misuse is assessed against the deposit, and we always show you what we found before anything is deducted.

Changes & cancellations

Plans change — here is how we handle it.

Yes, subject to the vehicle being free for the new dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your booking reference and we will move it across.

Message us with your booking reference and we will cancel it and confirm the refund. The cancellation terms that apply to your rental are shown at checkout before you pay.

Almost always — just message us before your drop-off time rather than after. Extending early means we can hold the same vehicle for you instead of having to swap you onto another one.

Still not sure about something?

Message us — a real person in Varkala replies, usually within a few minutes.
