It's about 3 km from Varkala railway station to the North Cliff — roughly ten minutes by autorickshaw, which is what almost everyone takes. There's also a local bus, taxis, a walkable but unpleasant route on foot, and the option of having a rented scooter waiting for you at the station.
Short guide, because this is a question with a short answer and a lot of bad information around it.
How far is North Cliff from Varkala railway station?
About 3 km, north-west, through Varkala town and out towards the coast. The station is inland; the cliff is not. Nothing about the walk from the platform tells you which direction the sea is in, which is why the auto drivers do well.
Autorickshaw — 10 minutes
The default, and generally the right choice. There's a rank directly outside the station and you'll be approached before you reach it.
Agree the fare before you get in — this is standard everywhere in Kerala and nobody will think it rude. Rates go up at night and when a train has just emptied. If a quote sounds high, the next driver is ten seconds away, and knowing the trip is only 3 km puts you in a much better position than not knowing.
Taxi or a booked cab
More comfortable, more expensive, and worth it if you've got real luggage or you're arriving with kids. Ride-hailing coverage in Varkala is patchy and unreliable at odd hours; a car arranged through your accommodation is the more dependable version. Most homestays will send someone if you ask when you book.
The local bus
Buses run between the station area and the town, and are extremely cheap. They are not a great idea with luggage, they don't run late, and they'll leave you in town rather than at the cliff.
Fine if you're travelling light, curious and unhurried. Not the move at 11pm with two rucksacks.
Can you walk it?
You can. About 35–40 minutes, and we wouldn't. There's no continuous footpath for much of it, the traffic doesn't expect pedestrians, and in the middle of the day the heat turns it into an ordeal. With a bag it's worse.
Once you're staying on the cliff, walking is lovely. The station run is the exception.
Can you have a rented bike delivered to the station?
Yes — we deliver to Varkala railway station on request, at no extra charge, along with anywhere on North Cliff and Varkala Beach. You come off the train, the bike is there with a helmet, and you skip the negotiation entirely.
Two things make it work: book ahead rather than on the platform, and send us your train number so we're there when you actually arrive rather than when you were scheduled to. Trains here run late often enough that it matters.
It only makes sense if you were going to rent anyway — but if you were, arriving with the bike already sorted removes the most annoying hour of the trip. Arriving late at night
Autos are still around for the late trains, though fewer and pricier. Have your accommodation's location saved offline before you arrive, because phone signal in the station area is not reliable and drivers navigate by landmark rather than by address.
"North Cliff" is understood by everyone. The name of your specific guesthouse frequently isn't.
What we'd actually do
Take an auto, agree the price first, and don't overthink it — it's a ten-minute ride. If you're renting a bike for your stay, have it brought to the station instead and start the holiday there rather than three kilometres later.
