The nearest airport to Varkala is Trivandrum International (TRV), about 45 km south — roughly an hour by road. Kochi (COK) is the other option at around 160 km, three and a half hours away, and worth it only if the flights are much better. By train you want Varkala Sivagiri station, which is a couple of kilometres inland from the cliff.
Getting to Varkala is easy. The part people get wrong is the last few kilometres, which is where a good arrival turns into an hour of standing around negotiating.
What is the nearest airport to Varkala?
Trivandrum International Airport, code TRV, about 45 km south of Varkala and typically an hour to an hour and a half by road depending on traffic through the city. It handles both domestic and international flights, including direct connections from the Gulf, and it's the obvious choice.
From the airport you have three options: a prepaid taxi from the counter inside the terminal, an app cab, or a train from Trivandrum Central after a short ride into the city. The taxi is simplest with luggage. The train is far cheaper and often no slower once you account for city traffic.
Is Kochi airport worth considering?
Only if it saves you a connection or a lot of money. Cochin International (COK) sits about 160 km north of Varkala, which is a three-and-a-half-hour drive or a comparable train journey.
It's a bigger airport with more international routes, so if flying into Kochi turns two flights into one, take it. If both airports are equally convenient, TRV wins on every other measure.
Which railway station do you need?
Varkala Sivagiri, station code VAK. It's on the main Thiruvananthapuram–Kollam line, so most trains running the Kerala coast stop there, and it's about 3 km from the North Cliff.
Don't get off at Trivandrum Central expecting to be close — you'll still be 45 km away. Book to Varkala Sivagiri specifically.
Trains are the way most people should arrive here. They're cheap, frequent along the coast, and they drop you closer to the cliff than the airport does.
How do you reach Varkala from Bangalore, Chennai or Delhi?
Fly to Trivandrum and take a taxi or train up, or take a direct train if you have the time. From Bangalore there are direct trains that run overnight into Varkala, which is comfortably the cheapest way and saves a night's accommodation.
From Chennai and Hyderabad it's a similar story with a longer journey. From Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata, fly — the train is a two-day commitment that is only worth it if the journey is the point.
For timings and fares use IRCTC or a booking site; those change constantly and we would only be quoting you something out of date.
How do you get from the station to your stay?
About 3 km, roughly ten minutes by autorickshaw, and there's a rank right outside. Agree the fare before you get in — standard practice everywhere in Kerala and nobody will think it rude.

Do you need a vehicle once you are here?
For the cliff and the main beach, no — that's all walkable. For everything else, effectively yes. Varkala's beaches are spread over about 10 km of coast and the places worth a day trip start at 28 km out.

When should you arrive?

Whenever you land, book the vehicle a day or two ahead in peak season. In December the good scooters go early, and arriving to whatever's left is a poor start.
