The best time to visit Varkala is October to March, when it is dry, the sea is calm enough to swim and everything on the cliff is open. December to February is the peak of that — best weather, biggest crowds, highest prices. Come in the shoulder months if you want the same weather with fewer people.
That's the short version and it's what every guide says. What they don't tell you is what the other six months are actually like, which matters if your dates aren't flexible.
October to March: the dry season
Warm days, low humidity by Kerala standards, calm sea, reliable sunsets. This is what Varkala is selling and it delivers.
October and March are the sweet spot in our opinion — the weather has settled but the cliff hasn't filled up, and you can still get a table without waiting. November is close behind.
Riding is at its easiest too: dry roads, good light, and long enough days to get to Kappil and back before dark without rushing.
When is Varkala busiest?
December and January, by a wide margin, with the peak around Christmas and New Year. The cliff path gets genuinely congested, the good rooms go weeks ahead, and prices across the board sit at their highest.
It's still a good time to come — the weather is the best of the year — but book everything earlier than feels necessary. That includes the vehicle: in peak season the popular scooters go first, and turning up on the day means taking whatever's left rather than the one you picked.
What is Varkala like in April and May?
Hot and humid, and increasingly so as May goes on. The sea is still swimmable and the crowds have thinned considerably, so if you can handle the heat there's real value here.
The practical adjustment is timing rather than avoidance: do everything before eleven and after four, and treat the middle of the day as a write-off. Riding in the early morning in April is genuinely lovely. Riding at two in the afternoon is not.
Prices drop noticeably from the peak, and you'll get your pick of vehicles.
What happens in Varkala during the monsoon?
The south-west monsoon runs roughly June to September, with June and July the heaviest. It does not rain constantly — the pattern is a few intense hours then bright, washed-out skies — but it rains properly when it rains.
Varkala in monsoon is green, quiet and cheap, and a lot of people prefer it. Swimming is out at every beach because of the undercurrents, some of the cliffside businesses close for the season, and the cliff edge itself is worth staying back from after sustained rain.

Is anything closed out of season?
Some of it, yes. A number of the cliffside cafés, shops and smaller guesthouses shut through the heaviest monsoon months and reopen around late September or October. It varies year to year and business to business, so check with wherever you're staying rather than assuming.
What stays open: the town itself, which carries on regardless, the transport, and us. Varkala town is a working Kerala town and doesn't observe the tourist calendar.
When is it cheapest?
June to September, comfortably. Accommodation drops hardest, and everything else follows.

February if the weather matters most and you'll book ahead. October if you want almost the same weather with half the people. August if you want the place close to empty, don't mind rain, and are coming to ride and look at things rather than to swim.
